[24 April 2010] A thought on Earth Day: The Earth Day 2010 page states: "Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever. While climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, it also presents the greatest opportunity – an unprecedented opportunity to build a healthy, prosperous, clean energy economy now and for the future." Not climate change is the greatest challenge of our time. Humanity is, and our way of being in the world is. We create poverty, inequality, slavery, wars, unsustainability. Thoughtlessly, we exploit and re-engineered planet Earth (which should be renamed Drearth: depleted, re-engineered Earth), we extinct species (and, if deemed practical by some, human races), and, on a side-note, also change the climate. But calling fever the greatest challenge doesn't help the patient whose way-of-life is causing the sickness. Without changing the picture we have of ourselves and changing our way of being in the world, there is little hope that we'll be able to cope with the detrimental side effects, such as climate change. Let's start a (New) Humanity Day.
